Tigo is committed to ensure that teachers in schools and other learning institutions in the country have access to the Internet.
This was said today by the company Interim General Manager, Cecile Tiano, when handing over 50 smartphones provided on credit by Tigo to teachers of Bungo Primary school in Morogoro as a pilot phase of a countrywide initiative by the telecom increase internet access in learning institutions.
As part of the package, the Bungo primary school teachers will also enjoy free access to the internet and making free calls among themselves, Ms Tiano said.
“Apart from creating a seamless communication platform to the teaching staff at the school, we believe that access to the internet will bring new social and economic opportunities to the teachers including e-learning,” Ms Tiano said.
To realize this objective, the general manager said Tigo will continue investing on the expansion and quality improvement of its network infrastructure, noting that the company has already set a side US $ 120 million for this in 2015.
Bungo primary school teachers now join millions of other Tigo customers accessing the company’s online services such as Tigo Music, Tigo Pesa App, free Facebook in Kiswahili and others.
Ms Tiano said, “This initiative represents our long term commitment to ensure that each and every Tanzanian is able to enjoy and access Tigo internet services and in the process drive a digital transformation agenda in the country.”
Commenting, Bungo primary school headmaster, Roman Luoga, thanked Tigo for the support saying access to the Internet will keep teachers at the school updated and knowledgeable on current issues, not only in the field of academics, but in other spheres of life as well.
“The smartphones and free access to the internet will keep us constantly informed of what is going in our country and the world large hence making us part of the global village,” Luoga said.
